EOB (explanation of benefits)
An EOB, or explanation of benefits, is the statement a dental insurer sends after it processes a claim. It shows the billed amount, the amount the plan allowed, what the plan paid, what the patient owes, and the reason for any adjustment or denial. The office and the patient each use it to understand the result.
Why it matters to the front desk
For the front desk, the EOB is the record that explains why a payment came in at the amount it did. A payment lower than expected is often explained by an allowed amount below the office fee, a deductible, a frequency limit or a downgrade to a cheaper material. Reading the EOB shows staff whether the difference is a balance to bill the patient or an adjustment the plan's contract requires the office to absorb, which depends on that contract.
When a patient has two plans, the office usually waits for the explanation of benefits from both before it finalizes what the patient owes. Billing the patient from the first statement alone can produce a wrong bill, because the second plan may still pay part of the balance. Checking coverage before the visit shows early that a second plan exists.
